Best Beats: Five Songs You Should Have Heard This Week

I’ve had several tracks on replay for the past few days, ranging from Elle Varner’s playful “Don’t Wanna Dance” to basically every song of Adrian Marcel’s impressive mixtape “Weak After Next.” Jill Scott and SZA’s “Divinity,” Molia’s “Too Late” and Majid Jordan’s “A Place Like This” were also on heavy rotation this week.

Adrian Marcel – Weak After Next

Adrian Marcel dropped “Weak After Next,” his first mixtape since releasing “7 Days Of Weak” last year. The project is slickly produced and packed with several R&B bangers that are sure to build even more buzz around Marcel. “Honey,” his duet with Kelly Rowland, “Fly” and “Be Mine” are three standout songs on the mixtape. But his stirring cover of James Browns’ “It’s A Man’s World” offers true glimpse into Marcel’s strengths as a vocalist.

Elle Varner – Don’t Wanna Dance 

Featuring a sample of Jimmy Castor’s “I Just Wanna Stop” — the same track used for the intro of Kanye West’s “We Don’t Care” — Elle Varner’s “Don’t Wanna Dance” is a light-hearted take on wasting her night at a party she didn’t really want to attend.  Her mind is on her man and her aching feet, a story she recounts over an infectious, instrument-packed production. The stacked harmonies on the second verse are an added bonus.

Molia – Too Late

Molia checks out of a toxic relationship in her bass-heavy “Too Late.” The production, with it’s synths, dreamy chords and thumping intro makes for a pretty aggressive breakup anthem.

Majid Jordan – A Place Like This

Majid Jordan, who are signed to Drake’s Toronto-based OVO Sound Label, teased the release of their upcoming EP with the projects title track “A Place Like This.” Featuring Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, the duo’s moody track is anchored by a strong bass-line and Maskati’s haunting vocals.

Sza and Jill Scott – Divinity

A collaboration between SZA and Jill Scott is expected to be nothing but great, and the two ladies of soul didn’t let us down. The track finds SZA and Scott singing over each other’s verses and sporadically tossing-in ad-libs as throughout the 8-minute-long vocal marathon. There is no harmonizing between the two, but the lush, futuristic production and free-flowing verses make for a magical song.
